It’s said the location used to belong to a temple for the Queen who is the patron goddess for coastal fishermen. Now this is a residential building, being whitewashed to welcome the 2010 Expo.”

Ob Berlin-Marzahn, Rostock-Lichtenhagen, Jena-Lobeda oder Magdeburg-Olvenstedt, wer sich einmal in einer dieser Plattenbau-Großsiedlungen der ehemaligen DDR umgesehen hat, mag sich kaum vorstellen, dass der Bau von industriell vorgefertigten Häuserkomplexen schon in den 20er Jahren von großen Architekten wie Le Corbusier als „Königsweg“ zukünftigen Wohnungsbaus gepriesen wurde. Diesen Weg griffen die Baumeister der DDR nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg wieder auf. Seit den späten 50er Jahren schien der Plattenbau die vielversprechendste Lösung zu sein, den teilweise noch aus den Schäden des zweiten Weltkrieges resultierenden Wohnungsmangel in Deutschlands Osten zu lindern und gleichzeitig einen Weg zu weisen in eine hellere und moderne sozialistische Wohnungszukunft. Gegenüber vielen unsanierten Altbauten boten die Wohnungen in der „Platte“ Annehmlichkeiten wie moderne Einbauküchen und zeitgemäße Sanitärräume, so dass der Ansturm auf Zuteilung einer solchen Wohnung bis zum Ende der DDR nie abriss. read more

the pogrom of rostock-lichtenhagen is certainly one of the worst possible associations to ‘plattenbauten’. however, since it belongs here somehow, some pictures reminding of the german mob from 1992 in rostock-lichtenhagen.
